It is well-known that the two prominent Cretan authors of the title, “elder” and “disciple”, make up an inseparable tandem in Modern Greek literature. Therefore, there is no need to explain why their vocabulary is co-examined in this Glossary, as the approach is certainly mutually assistive.

This Glossary is primarily addressed to the broad readership and less so to philologists, or linguists and lexicographers, whose additions and corrections are welcome and expected. This work deals with the most famous short and long texts of the two authors, both originals and translations (literary and non-literary, essays, letters, lectures, and articles). In order to save time and energy, whenever following an initial scan very few or no interesting words were found, the works were discarded. During the first stage of indexing, the list of entries included words which could empirically be described as “difficult to understand” for the modern ordinary reader or “unknown” by school standards. This was later conventionally limited to words and usages that are not registered in either of the two most recent dictionaries of our language: the Dictionary of Standard Modern Greek (Manolis Triandaphyllidis Foundation) and the Dictionary of Usage (Academy of Athens).
